With Christmas round the corner, we are looking back on some productions from 2024 who filmed at some fabulous locations in Newham. From heart-pounding thrillers to heartwarming dramas, the borough has hosted a variety of exciting productions this year. As the year draws to a close, it’s clear that Newham has become a go-to destination for filmmakers looking to capture the vibrant energy and unique charm of East London—making it the perfect backdrop for stories of all kinds. Take a look below!
Newham’s Knocking at your Door!
The Postcode Lottery Christmas draw advert, this year visited the borough of Newham, bringing the festive cheer with them. Setting up on Bisson Road and Leggatt Road in Stratford, the production required a temporary road closure and careful traffic management to bring the vision to life. A camera crane soared across the green, capturing the scene below where fake snow covered the streets, transforming the area into a winter wonderland. Houses were beautifully decorated with Christmas decorations and snow, and the close relationship the production built with the local residents played a key part in the smooth running on the shoot. The streets came alive with dancers performing as a vintage looking but actually electric Postcode Lottery van, specially designed for the shoot, completed the scene, making it a heartwarming celebration of community and Christmas spirit.
Beth Elliott, the film officer on the job said “Involved shoots such as this with lots of different elements to consider can face us with challenges, but with tight liaison with both the council departments and the local residents this shoot ran smoothly and the results are fabulous! We always priorities the consultation of local residents when a shoot like this comes to town, making sure they are happy with all arrangements and it’s fantastic when they can become involved like in this instance of having their front doors ‘Christmas-afied!'”
‘The Gentleman’: Gangsters Visit Newham for Netflix’s Much Anticipated
In 2024, The Gentlemen brought high-octane action to Newham, with driving scenes filmed at the iconic Lower-Lea Crossing and a major shoot taking place at a warehouse on Barbers Road. The production required two weeks of prep work to transform the warehouse into the hub of the criminal family that The Gentlemen follows, and a full week of filming, with multiple pivotal scenes shot at this location. Actors were seen wielding replica firearms, and the MET Police Film Unit was on hand to ensure safety throughout the shoot.
Here at the Newham Film Office, managed by the Film Office, we facilitated a range of logistical needs, including securing permits for a large camera crane, coordinating parking for technical vehicles, and consulting with residents and businesses to minimise disruption.
The results are now on display—The Gentlemen is available to stream in its entirety on Netflix!
‘Extraordinary’ Filming in Newham: A Super Location for a Super Show
The second season of the Disney+ Comedy is back!… The season picks up directly where season 1 left off. Jen enrols as a client at the power clinic in the continued journey of personal growth to discover her power. However, she soon realises that the process of finding her power isn’t as easy as she’d hoped – nothing is smooth sailing!
The production planted themselves in Newham for almost 3 weeks during Spring of last year to shoot scenes depicting the magical “void”. It was quite the Hollywood production with camera cranes and a large scale set dress in order to transform the local area in to a supernatural portal dump, where main characters within the series go to discuss and dispose of their unwanted belongings. Very exciting!
You can catch the latest season of the refreshing take on the Superhero genre now on Disney+. Take a look at the trailer below.
