A Town Called Newham: In Top Gear For The New Year

As the year draws to a close we look back on the bumper year we’ve had here at the Newham Film Office, managed by the Film Office. Across the borough we have welcomed productions from far and wide from big commercials and TV Dramas to some fantastic music videos and short films. We’ve picked out a recent selection below for you to take a look!

A Town Called Malice

“A Town Called Malice” is Sky’s upcoming drama set on the backdrop of the palm trees and beach of 1980s Costa del Sol, it follows the Lords, a crime family of petty thieves from South London, as they decamp from London to Spain to profit from an unexpected windfall – and to escape the attention of the police in a high-profile murder enquiry.

The production filmed at a council property on the Camel and Drew Road Estate with multiple filming days across 2 blocks filming scenes involving period police cars and officers arriving at the residence which naturally comes with it’s own difficulties but with full consultation and planning across council departments shoots like this can take place without a hitch.

Areas that accommodate filming benefit from significant ‘local spend’ by productions – through use of cafes, restaurants, hire of properties, accommodation providers, parking and green room hire, so it was great to see local businesses benefit from a shoot of this scale.

A Town Called Malice has no confirmed release date yet but it set to hit our screens in 2023, check out the teaser trailer below!

Top Gear

BBC’s fan favourite Top Gear paid a visit to Newham over summer this year filming driving scenes on several streets throughout the borough such as Royal Albert Way. Newham’s streets are popular for their driving scenes with it’s wide roads that are often pretty quiet and offer fantastic views of Canary Wharf and the docks.

Top Gear were filming the new Land Rover model from a tracking vehicle rigged with a Russian arm which involved having 2 Metropolitan Police outriders present for public safety & reassurance and to provide a rolling road. The shoot all went smoothly and the results are fab, check out the episode here!

Secret Invasion

Marvel’s latest series ‘Secret Invasion’ set to hit Disney+ in 2023 is highly anticipated as it follows Samuel L. Jackson’s character Nick Fury we first met in Captain Marvel in a crossover event series showcasing a faction of shape-shifting ‘Skrulls’ who have been infiltrating Earth for years.

The production took to Royal Albert Way Underpass to film scenes involving 8 action cars with a road closure in place over 2 days which called for full consultation and careful planning allowing the shoot to run smoothly.

Dominic Reeve-Tucker the Film Officer on the job said, “It is fantastic to have Marvel in the borough, productions of this size and scale using Newham’s locations is a great way to showcase how the borough has a versatile selection of filming locations and to present ourselves as a filming friendly borough.”

We can’t wait to see what the series looks like when it drops next year but in the meantime, take a look below at the trailer!

Treason

Netflix’s upcoming spy drama ‘Treason’ which follows An MI6 deputy’s bright future taking a sharp turn after a reunion with a Russian spy that makes him question his entire life. The production filmed driving scenes throughout Newham across Connaught Bridge and through Silvertown.

Treason is set to hit Netflix on December 26th but for now, check out the trailer below!
