Beckton Alps

Newham | Derelict , Open Area / Land | Ref: 20228

This open land is located on the highest point in Newham, overlooking highways, flyovers and Canary Wharf with 360 panoramic views of the borough.

The site is the former Beckton Gas Works, opened in 1870. Following the closure of the gas works in 1970, the site became derelict, and the large range of spoil heaps earned the local nickname "Beckton Alps." In 1989 a dry ski slope was opened on the site with remains still visible.

The site has a limited available space at the top of the hill to access for use. T are some great walkways that lead up to the summit and around the Alp itself.
