Naomie Ackie, Hugh Bonneville, David Hayman and Sam Claflin joined Timothy Spall in the contemporary crime thriller The Corrupted from director Ron Scalpello.
The production contacted the Newham Film Office, managed by The Film Office, back in February 2018 as they were looking for a Council Estate to use for multiple locations for the upcoming British Independent Feature.
Set ahead of the 2012 London Olympics, the film follows Liam (Sam Claflin), an ex-con trying to win back the love and trust of his family. He has lost everything at the hands of a local crime syndicate run by Clifford Cullen (Spall), who has high-level connections in politics, finance and the police force. Liam’s drive for redemption sees him caught up in a web of conspiracy, crime, and corruption.
The production started filming on the 3rd April in the Empty Flat location and around the Carpenters Estate. The Newham Film Office, managed by The Film Office, ensured filming ran smoothly by working closely with the production, the Newham Community & Environment Council Department and local residents.
During their weeks filming on location, the estate became the live set for all kinds of action shots. The production used the space to its best by doing chase scenes around the estate walkways, doubling the exterior of the Versatile Offices as a Boxing Gym, dressing the flats as modern homes and filming general dialogue scenes in the estate communal areas.
Location Manager Tony Hood said: “The shoot at The Carpenters Estate lasted over two weeks and worked very well. We were able to place a wide variety of scenes within the estate and local area – everyone was delighted with the results.
The Film Office worked very hard alongside the location team to manage the changing brief, dates and impact of the production. They were able to guide us through what would be practical and ensure that we did not have to look elsewhere for the more dramatic scenes. Initially there were concerns from the council regarding our sensitive scenes however The Film Office supported the production and ensured that all scenes were able to be filmed. All their efforts were greatly appreciated.
